Present Simple vs. Present Continuous

Present Continuous

This tense is all about movement, change, and drama—perfect for things happening right now or around this time.

📖 I’m writing a book.
🧘‍♀️ I’m doing yoga now.

🌍 This month, I’m learning Italian.
📚 This summer, I’m taking an English course.

😤 You’re always throwing away my stuff!‍

Present Simple

It tells us about things that are true, regular, or official—like a news anchor or a football commentator.

Simple keeps it real:
🙏 We apologize for not replying sooner.

⚽ Look! He runs, he shoots… he scores!

📰 PM of Great Britain resigns.

Mixing Present Simple & Present Continuous

For storytelling, combine these tenses to create contrast between background and main actions!

👀 Scene setting (Present Continuous):

‍🐕 Look! The dog is chasing the cat!
🌳 The cat is climbing the tree!‍

🎬 Main events (Present Simple for dramatic effect):

‍ 🏃‍♂️ The dog stops… The cat jumps… And—oh no!—the dog runs away!

👉 Why does this work?

• Present Continuous = background action, things in motion
• Present Simple = key events, short and dramatic moments

Stative Verbs

Some verbs prefer to stay in the Present Simple—they describe feelings, thoughts, and senses.

Feelings: You don’t have to act on how you feel—it’s already clear.

• I like this movie. (Not: I am liking this movie.)

Thoughts and opinions: These aren’t temporary actions—they’re your permanent beliefs.

• I believe in hard work. (Not: I am believing in hard work.)

Senses: You see something, but you’re not doing it, so no Present Continuous here.

• I see you. (Not: I am seeing you.)

⚠️ But some stative verbs break the rules!

Present Perfect / Past Simple & Present Perfect Continuous / Past Continuous

Present Perfect

This tense shows results or experiences that matter now.

💻 I have accomplished two Java courses.
📚 I have read ten books this year.

👶 Sarah has had a baby! (It happened recently, and now she’s a mom!)
🤖 Someone has invented a chip for learning languages! (Let’s imagine this miracle happened and we can see the result of it.)

🕰 ❌ No specific time is mentioned! The focus is on now!

Past Simple

Past Simple is like your photo album—snapshots of things that happened at a specific time in the past.

🐻 Did you collect Kinder Hippos when you were a child?
🎄 Last Christmas, I gave you my heart…

🕰 Uses time markers like:
📅 yesterday, last week, several days ago…

Past Continuous

Imagine you’re watching a movie flashback. Past Continuous paints the background action that was happening for some time in the past.

💭 Ten years ago, I was struggling to speak English fluently.
📖 Last summer, I was reading a book for two hours every day.

🕰 Uses phrases like:
⏳ for two hours, all summer, from five to seven…

Present Perfect Continuous

This one is like your activity tracker—it focuses on how long something has been happening until now.

👩‍🍳 I have been cooking all morning. I’m so tired!
🏃 I have been running around the city all day!

❓ Why are you sweaty?
💪 Because I have been working out!

Future Forms

Mastering the Future ‍

1. "Will"

Use "will" for quick decisions, predictions, and promises

👩‍💻 Oh no, my battery is dead! I’ll charge my phone now.

🌍 A fortune-teller: ‘You will get married very soon.’

🌍 I think AI will change the world in the next 10 years.

🤝 I will always support you!
👜 Don’t worry, I’ll help you with your heavy bags.

2. "Be Going To"

This is your "future to-do list"—use it when you have an intention or evidence that something is about to happen.

🎓 I’m going to take a Spanish course next month.
🏋️‍♂️ I’m going to start working out (someday… maybe 😆).

💍Are you going to marry my daughter?

☁️ Look at those dark clouds! It’s going to rain.
🚗 That driver is texting… He’s going to crash!

🚫 BUT: If you’ve arranged something officially, use…🔽

3. Present Continuous

Think of this as your calendar - use it for fixed plans with specific arrangements.

🎭 I’m meeting my friend for dinner tomorrow.
✈️ We’re flying to Tokyo next week!

🚫 BUT: If it’s a general schedule, use…

4. Present Simple

Some things in life don’t change, and when they don’t, we use Present Simple to talk about the future.

🚆 The train leaves at 8 AM tomorrow.
🎬 The movie starts in five minutes!

Even if we’re talking about the future, we don’t use "will" after these words! Instead, we stick to Present Simple.

⏳ Tell me when you come. (❌ NOT: when you will come)
🛫 As soon as you finish your work, we will go to have dinner.
🎉 We’ll start the meeting after everyone arrives.

🤔 I suppose we miss the train.

🔍 I suppose they find a solution eventually.

5. Future Continuous

Want to sound more sophisticated? Future Continuous is perfect for talking about an ongoing action at a specific time in the future.

📞 Sorry, I can’t join the call at 3 PM—I’ll be flying to Paris.
🍕 This time tomorrow, I’ll be eating pizza in Rome!

6. Future Perfect

This is your "time traveler" tense—it lets you jump ahead and talk about something that will be completed before a specific time in the future.

Structure: By _(the time)___, (I,you,we…) + will + have + past participle _____

📖 I will have read 20 new books by the end of the year.
🎯 By 2030, scientists will have discovered a cure for cancer (hopefully!).

‍7. Future Perfect Continuous

Imagine looking ahead in time and focusing on how long something will have been happening. That’s where the Future Perfect Continuous (will have been + V-ing) comes in! It shows that an action will be ongoing for a period of time before a specific point in the future.

📍 When do we use it?

1️⃣ To show the duration of an action before a future point
🔢 By next year, I will have been working here for a decade.
📖 By 10 PM, she will have been studying for five hours straight!

2️⃣ To emphasize the process, not just the result
🏃‍♂️ By the time you arrive, I will have been waiting for you for an hour!
📝 By Friday, they will have been discussing the contract for a week.

• Future Perfect (will have + past participle) focuses on completion:
  ✅ By 8 PM, I will have finished my work. (Done!)
• Future Perfect Continuous (will have been + V-ing) focuses on duration:
  ✅ By 8 PM, I will have been working for 10 hours. (Still going!)

8. The Reporting Structure: "To Be + Infinitive" for the Future

When discussing official plans, instructions, or expectations for the future, English often uses "to be + infinitive" instead of "will" or "going to."

This structure gives a formal or authoritative tone, commonly found in news reports, official announcements, and rules.

🏛️ The Prime Minister of Great Britain is to come to visit Ukraine very soon.
⚖️ The new law is to take effect next month.

📢 The population of the world is to grow really fast next centuries.
💼 A new CEO is to take over by the end of the year.‍

Gerund / Infinitive

Gerund (-ing)

🧩 After Phrasal Verbs

▶ put off (delay) → I put off doing my homework.
▶ go on (continue) → She goes on learning the language.
▶ carry on (continue) → He carried on playing after the injury.
▶ keep on (persist) → They kept on working despite the noise.

👥 Verb + Someone + Gerund (-ing)

💡 Past gerund

If you want to show that an action happened before another past event:

To + Infinitive

💛 More Common Verbs That Take "To + Infinitive":

Seem → You seem to be really calm now.

Appear → She appears to be very tired today.

Tend → My neighbors tend to talk too much.

Pretend → She pretended to be sick to skip school.

💡 Common verbs that often use the negative infinitive:
ask, decide, expect, hope, promise, refuse, tell, advise, remind, warn, plan

Linking Verbs

1The Classic: "To Be"

The backbone of linking verbs, "to be" connects a subject to either a noun (identity) or an adjective (description).

2Appear, Look, Prove, Seem – To "To Be" or Not to "To Be"?

These verbs can sometimes include "to be", but it's optional.

Rule of Thumb:

• For short, common adjectives, drop "to be." (The task seemed easy.)
• For formal or longer descriptions, "to be" makes things smoother. (He appeared to be in charge of the project.)

3"Become" = Transformations

When something changes, "become" and "get" both work—but "become" is more formal.

4"Go" for Negative Change

Some changes in life are unfortunate, and that’s where "go" comes in.

We also use "go" for gradual physical changes:
